What Does UPnP on Xbox Mean?

UPnP means Universal Plug and Play, which is a router feature that lets different devices communicate within a single network.

If the UPnP bug appears on your console, it means that your router’s UPnP setting is not allowing your Xbox One or Xbox Series to become a connected device within your network.

Many users have experienced the UPnP error before, whether we talk about Series S/X or Xbox One UPnP.

Since connected devices are not allowed to participate in digital channels, it is like players were having connectivity issues when trying to connect to Xbox Live.

How to Fix Xbox UPnP Not Successful Error Message

Now that you know the meaning of UPnP, it is time to understand how to fix this problem on your console.

Most of the solutions are highly technical, but worry not - we will give you all the steps to follow to get rid of the UPnP not successful error as straightforward as we can.

Without further ado, let’s fix UPnP not successful error on your Xbox One or S console right away.

Fix 1: Turn On Universal Plug and Play on Network Settings

Perhaps “Disable UPnP” is turned on on your router settings menu.

This creates the need to enable the UPnP protocol directly from your router local devices.

First, you need to access your router’s setup webpage.

You can find the router login page by physically turning over your router and checking the Default Access section.

Whatever your router manufacturer is, these are the steps you will need to follow afterwards:

  1. Login to the Settings Page using the router’s username and default password (usually, the default username and password are simply “Admin”). Press enter, and move on;
  2. Open the Settings drop-down menu, and go to Advanced. Here, look for the option that says UPnP Settings;
  3. After you select Settings, you must turn UPnP on by toggle switching the button.

You can disable UPnP from this UPnP menu whenever you want.

In most cases, enabling UPnP on your router should be more than enough to solve these problems. Otherwise, move on to the following fix.

Fix 2: Update Your Xbox Console

Perhaps your Xbox One or Series just needs to be updated. If there’s cached data messing up with your console, then your network device won’t work as you want it to work.

Thus, we must simply update your Xbox from the basic home page and settings menu:

  1. Turn on your Xbox, press the Xbox Button, and go to Settings;
  2. Once you open Settings, go to System and select Updates;
  3. Check if there are any updates pending on your Xbox One or Series and install it.

Outdated consoles will not support UPnP and will face issues with persistent storage cache errors.

Fix 3: Add Static IP Address to Your Console

If the aforementioned steps don’t work, then you must set up an IP address that will automatically forward the information required for the UPnP protocol to work.

To do this, do the following:

  1. Turn on your Xbox One or Series and go to Settings;
  2. Open your console’s network settings and select Advanced settings;
  3. Here, go to IP settings under subnet mask and select Manual;
  4. Change the last number of the Ip to 0.50. This will set up an alternate Mac address;
  5. Now, go back and select DNS settings;
  6. Here, set DNS as Manual and select 1.0.0.1 as primary DNS and 1.1.1.1 as secondary DNS.

Now, press the reset button on your console, and see if the UPnP bug disappeared. Otherwise, continue with the following fix.

Fix 4: Enable UPnP and Open Nat Type on Xbox

Sometimes, simply opening the strict NAT on your console can do the trick, so the network finds the correct ports for you.

In this case, simply go to Settings, Network Settings, and set NAT types as Open.

In order to do this, it is essential to complete the aforementioned step on Fix 3.

If you don’t change your static IP address beforehand, the current network status will continue to bug out.

Thus, make sure that your Xbox One, Series, or other devices of the Xbox Family are correctly set up before opening the NAT (Network Address Translation).

Fix 5: Perform Manual Port Forwarding on Xbox

Last but not least, if you cannot get rid of the UPnP problem because the private network is simply not connecting, then you need to forward ports automatically on your router’s menu.

  1. Open your Router configuration page as you did before;
  2. Go to Advanced, and select Virtual Server;
  3. Microsoft recommends using port 88, so add a new virtual server and type in 88 in both Internal and External port;
  4. Under the IP section, type in the new static address that you set up for your console during Fix 3;
  5. Save the changes, restart your console, and see if the Xbox One UPnP bug disappeared.

If you don’t have the technical expertise to do this, we recommend you hire a professional.

Either way, port forwarding is perhaps the last resort alternative, so we are confident that you will fix your problems before getting to this point.
