For one reason or another, the power button is not working, so you press the PS button on the controller and it still doesn’t work.

What just happened? Did your PS5 console just break?

Before you lose your head over this, it is important to know that we might just be talking about a minor problem.

This post will cover all the info you need about:

  • What to do is PS5 won’t turn on;
  • How to fix PS5 not turning on;
  • Steps to follow if your PlayStation 5 console turns off and can’t turn on.

3 Common Reasons Why PS5 Won’t Turn On

Many users have certainly had the same issue as you with PS5 and other devices, which helps us to understand what is happening to your PS5.

It is important to be extra careful here so we can identify what is happening to your console right away, so check the most common reasons why your PS5 won’t properly turn on.

1. PS5 Hardware Issues

First and foremost, we might be talking about hardware malfunctions. This means that a bad SSD, a problem with a power socket and any other hardware problem might cause your console to be completely unresponsive.

Sadly, this is a serious problem and it is highly unlikely that you are able to get a console hardware malfunction sorted out by yourself.

2. PS5 System Software and Rest Mode Bugs

Software bugs related to Rest Mode have been haunting PS5 since the console first launched.

If you are facing a software issue on your PS5, it is important to identify the warning message on the screen to understand how to solve it.

Until Sony releases the latest version of the PlayStation Software, bugs like these will continue happening all the time.

3. PS5 Power Cable or Power Supply Issues

Last but not least, maybe you have power issues with your PS5. Perhaps the power cord is damaged, or maybe the power supply is not working anymore.

It is quite easy to identify these problems, but it can be a little costly to repair them.

How to Fix PS5 Not Turning On

Now that you know the main reasons why your PS5 is not turning on, we need to find the best way to fix your console right away.

Follow each one of the following fixes and we assure you that your console will work like new as soon as you end reading this article!

1. Reboot Your PlayStation 5

First, you must manually reboot your PS5. Press the power button for about 15 seconds and it will reboot.

At this point, we recommend you insert a game disc on your console.

Of course, you can only insert a game disc if you have the PS5 standard edition, so if you have a digital system, then ignore this step.

Sometimes, the disc drive gets a bug if you turn off the console when a “Game Save Data” is on the screen, so this might as well do the trick.

2. Unplug All the Power Cords and Supplies

If using the power button to reboot your PlayStation didn’t work, then it’s time to see if the power cable and the power supply are working as they should.

Make sure that both the power cable and power supply are properly plugged into the console.

Also, we recommend that you don’t use the same outlet as always - instead, use a different wall socket to see if the problem is caused by this.

Unplug the power from your console, and then reconnect the power.

See if the console is fixed now - otherwise, move on to the next step.

3. Use a Different Power Outlet or Cable

If the power outlet, cable, or supply is damaged, you might need to get a replacement cable for it.

From now on, make sure to only use a power strip with a surge protector if you don’t want your PS5 to be damaged.

Make sure that you get a different power cable at the electronics store that is compatible with your console. Otherwise, the results might be catastrophic.

4. Start Your PS5 in Safe Mode

If you enter safe mode on your PS5, you might be able to fix it entirely. PS5 Safe Mode runs a safe version of the PS5 system software, which is what you must do to avoid possible bugs.

  1. Plug your PS5 to draw power as it normally does;
  2. Long-press the power button for 15 seconds until the blinking led light turns off;
  3. Once the Safe Mode menu opens, you need to connect a Dualshock controller through the USB drive;
  4. Press the main PlayStation button, select Safe Mode, and when you hear a second beep, your system will immediately turn on like that.

5. Power Cycle Your PS5

This only works if your PS5 console turns on, but it won’t start whatsoever:

  1. Long-press the power button until the console turns off;
  2. Once you hear a beep, disconnect the console from the power outlet and let the console sit for 20 minutes;
  3. After 20 minutes, the power cycling will be over and you can turn on your PS5 again.

Remember that you must disconnect the console and let it sit for a while before trying to turn it on.

6. Get Your Console’s Internal Hardware Cleaned Out

It is possible that the internal components of your PS5 are as dirty as they get. In this case, using compressed air can help you clean the console entirely.

Still, we recommend you do this in specialized technical service and not by yourself, unless you know exactly what you are doing.

7. Get an Official Sony’s PlayStation Fix

If none of the aforementioned solutions worked for you, then it might be time to contact PlayStation Support.

Perhaps your console is new and has free repair perks available, so you might have luck today.

Still, the components inside of your PS5, such as the internal power supply unit, cannot be fixed by anyone - only Sony is capable of successfully fixing them.

There’s a chance that your console goes back to factory settings when getting returned, but at least it will be fixed. For more PS5 insights, Hypenoon is here for you!
