How to Make a Potion of Weakness in Minecraft

There are three types of them - potions, lingering potions, and splash potions.
Lingering potions leave a cloud on the ground with a lingering status effect. Splash potions are throwable - you can affect other characters with them.
Today I will show you how to make a Potion of Weakness in Minecraft.
What is Potion of Weakness (1:30)?
There are around 28 potions in Minecraft. Potion of Weakness is a basic potion. Unlike other potions, it doesn’t require a Nether Wart to brew, nor an Awkward Potion.
The “1:30” marks the duration of the Weakness effect.
Pro tip
To increase the Potion of Weakness effect duration, you will need a Redstone placed in the top box of the brewing menu. Once you add Potion of Weakness (1:30) in the bottom box and begin brewing, the effect duration will be increased to 3:00.
The Potion of Weakness Ingredients
What do you need to brew the Potion of Weakness? The list of required materials is short. You need:
- A Brewing Stand,
- Blaze Powder,
- Fermented Spider Eye,
- Glass Water Bottle.
So, add ingredients to your shopping list and move on!
Brewing Stand
You can find the Brewing Stand inside:
- end ships, where it contains Instant Health II potions,
- the basement of igloos, where it contains a splash potion of Weakness
- village churches (no potions here).
The latter does not contain any potions.
You can also craft a Brewing Stand in one of the two ways:
- Blaze Rod + any stone-tier block (java edition only).
- Blaze Rod + Cobblestone/Blackstone/Cobbled Deepslate (Bedrock Edition only).
Blaze Powder
This is your fuel to run the Brewing Stand. You can craft it from Blaze Rod.
Fermented Spider Eye
The ingredients are:
- Brown Mushroom - Mine it from mushroom blocks. The chance of getting a brown mushroom is quite high.
- Sugar - You can make it from Sugar Cane or a Honey Bottle.
- Spider Eye - drops from Spiders and Cave Spiders as well as Witches. You can also loot it from chests in the Desert temple.
Simply, open up your crafting menu, add ingredients and mix them up.
Glass Water Bottle
If you didn’t find it already and you don’t have it in your inventory by now, you can easily craft Water Bottles. All you need is three pieces of glass. Open up the crafting table and put 3 glasses in the bottom boxes.
Once you do it, find a water source block and fill the Glass Bottle with water.
How to Make a Potion of Weakness in Minecraft
As we said earlier, Potion of Weakness is a basic potion, so the brewing process is not hard at all. Actually, it is easier than usual.
Step 1. Gather the ingredients first
Gathering all ingredients for Potion of Weakness can take a moment, so waste no more time, and get them all before you start the brewing. We have covered the process of obtaining, crafting, or looting all ingredients, so you should have no problem.
Step 2. Open up the Brewing Stand menu
The far-left box is where you should add Blaze Powder. After you do it, the Brewing Stand will activate.
Step 3. Place the Fermented Spider Eye in the top slot, and Glass Bottles of Water in the bottom boxes.
Step 4. Begin brewing process. After a few seconds of gulping, you should receive your freshly brewed three Potions of Weakness.
Splash Potion of Weakness
This is a throwable version of Potion of Weakness. It is a lingering potion, which leaves a cloud with a Weakness status effect on the ground. It is especially useful against other mobs.
Required materials are Potion of Weakness and Gunpowder.
We already covered how to get the Potion of Weakness, so let’s talk about Gunpowder briefly. You can get it from:
- Mobs - Creepers and Ghasts drop 0-2 pieces of Gunpowder when killed. Witches drop 0-6 pieces (Looting can increase drops),
- Trading - You have ⅙ chance to get Gunpowder from a Wandering trader in exchange for an Emerald,
- Chests - you can loot Gunpowder from chests in a Dungeon, Desert temple, Shipwreck, and Woodland Mansion.
The preparation of Splash Potion of Weakness
Place the Blaze Powder in the far left box to activate the Brewing Stand.
Place the Potion of Weakness in a bottom slot. After you do it, add the Gunpowder in the top box.
The result of the brewing process will be a Splash Potion of Weakness.
What can I do with the Potion of Weakness?
Potion of Weakness has two major applications.
It can cure Zombie Villagers
In most zombie-themed motion pictures in Hollywood and on streaming services, the only cure to zombieness is decapitation or a shot in the head. It is not the case for Minecraft, though.
You can cure Zombie Villagers and turn them into normal Villagers.
You will need a Golden Apple for it. Normally, Golden Apple is used to increase the chances of taming a horse. You can eat it to restore 4 points of hunger and 9.6 hunger saturation.
Golden Apple generates naturally or it can be crafted. You can find it in:

Alternatively, you can craft it from Gold Ingots and an Apple.
Use it in combination with the Splash Potion of Weakness and it will successfully cure Zombie Villagers.
It lowers the mobs’ damage
Mobs will not pose much threat if you know what you’re doing. However, you can use any edge over them. Potion of Weakness can provide you with such an edge. It lowers the mob’s damage, meaning it will take them longer to take you down.
Pro tip
There isn’t much use for you to drink Potion of Weakness. It will lower your attack damage value which is not desired.
