There’s an item in Minecraft that you can’t avoid using: swords. Swords are the heart and soul of Minecraft’s combat.

You will need swords in your journey regardless of the way you decide to play the game.

Overall, swords are among the best weapons in the game, which means that it’s essential for Minecrafter to learn how to use them.

But one thing is using close-range weapons like swords, and another thing is making them.

That is why today, this in-detail Minecraft tutorial will tell you everything you need to know about these topics:

  • How to make a sword in Minecraft;
  • What to know about Minecraft swords;
  • Best ways to make swords directly on the Crafting Menu.

What Are Minecraft Swords?

Minecraft Swords are melee weapons that are used through all Minecraft versions, which include Minecraft Java Edition (Windows, Mac, Linux PC’s), Education Edition (Mac, PC), Bedrock Edition (Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation) and Pocket Edition for mobile devices.

Minecraft Swords can only be crafted on the Crafting Table, so you can’t use the classic Crafting Grid to make them.

What Can You Use Swords in Minecraft For?

The uses for swords in Minecraft are pretty obvious. Although it is clear that swords act mainly as weapons, there are a couple of things you need to know about them in the Minecraft world.

1. Slay and Fight Hostile Mobs

First and foremost, you can inflict attack damage to hostile and non-hostile enemies by using your sword.

Multiple items can cause damage, but when it comes to short-range devastation, swords are your best shot.

Also, note that you can’t put two swords in each hand. You can only use one at a time.

Some enemies, such as the Ender Dragon, are better fought using ranged weapons, such as crossbows.

2. Cut Cobwebs or Bamboo

Cobwebs are hard to sort out. Just take out your first sword, and cut through it!

Bamboo can also be cut using any sword. It is the best show you have if you want to open your way through these materials.

3. Add Enchantments to the Sword

Swords can be enchanted with a total of 10 different enchantments in the game, including Bane of the Arthropods and the Sharpness Enchantment.

Likewise, you can repair swords on a Minecraft Anvil without losing the power enchantment previously applied to the tool.

How to Make a Sword in Minecraft

Before you craft a sword in Minecraft, there are three fundamental things you need to know:

  1. You can only make a sword in Minecraft by using the Crafting Table. Therefore, read our related Crafting Table article so you learn everything about this block;
  2. There are six different types of swords in Minecraft, and the materials required for each one heavily vary;
  3. Swords are mainly melee weapons, so make sure that you need a sword for combat instead of another item.

Note that all the sword recipes require one stick, so you better learn how to make them.

1. Wooden Sword

Let’s start with the simplest sword: the wooden sword.

Clearly, the wooden sword in Minecraft is made out of wood, and it can be made on the Crafting Grid within three quick steps:

  1. Firstly, you need two wooden planks of any kind. You can find wood planks by cutting trees. Wooden swords can be made using wood planks of any kind, such as dark oak wood and classic oak planks;
  2. Secondly, you need one stick. Putting two planks on the Crafting Table will create one or two sticks that you can use;
  3. Then, put the stick on the bottom middle square of the Crafting Area, and the two planks in the two boxes above it.

The wooden sword will form, and you can move it out to your inventory.

They are as durable as a wooden pickaxe, so they aren’t the best type of sword around.

2. Iron Sword

Now, let’s move onto the second main sword, the iron sword. In order to make an iron sword, you need two iron ingots.

Smelting iron blocks on a furnace will create four iron ingots, which you can use to make iron swords:

  1. Put the stick in the middle bottom box of the Crafting Table;
  2. Put the two iron ingots above the sticks;
  3. Move the iron sword to your inventory and you will be good to go.

3. Stone Sword

Stone swords are also good as well. In order to make a stone sword, you either need the same type of Cobblestone in Minecraft, or any type of stone.

  1. Put the stick on the same grid as mentioned before;
  2. Above the stick, put one stone block on the center square, and another one immediately above it;
  3. Move the stone sword out of the Crafting Menu into your inventory and you will be good to go.

4. Golden Sword

Now we are moving into better swords in Minecraft. Golden Swords require two gold ingots in order to be made.

Smelting gold ore on a furnace creates four gold ingots that you will need during your adventure:

  1. Put the stick on the Crafting Table where it should go (middle bottom square);
  2. Then, put the two gold ingots right above the stick, one after the other;
  3. Move the golden sword out of the Crafting Table and enjoy a sword worth having!

5. Diamond Sword

Diamond swords are perhaps the most iconic Minecraft sword out there.

You need two diamonds, which can be found by mining diamond ore.

Diamond ores can be found deep into the heart of the Overworld, so you better bring your stone pickaxe with you.

  1. Put the stick on the Crafting Table;
  2. Above the stick, place the two diamonds required for the recipe;
  3. The diamond sword will form - move the diamond sword out of the inventory and start using it.

6. Netherite Sword

Finally, it’s turn for the Netherite Sword, the absolute best sword in the Minecraft world.

In order to make a Netherite Sword, you will need a Smithing Table and Ancient Debris.

Ancient Debris can only be found in the Nether, and they are required to make Netherite Ingot. Netherite Scrap is also necessary.

On the other hand, the Smithing Table needs to be crafted using four planks of any kind plus two iron ingots.

  1. Make a diamond sword. Follow the previously mentioned steps so you can learn how to make a diamond sword on the crafting grid;
  2. Go to the Smithing Table with your recently crafted diamond sword and a Netherite Ingot;
  3. Place the sword next to the ingot, and the Netherite Sword will form. Move it to your inventory and that’s it!

That’s all you need to know about how to make swords in Minecraft!

You are ready to make any sword you like and slay those hostile enemies around the Nether, the End and the Overworld.
