It’s time to push forward in our Minecraft adventure! The times when we were making simple houses and structures are long gone - it’s time to make more complex systems.

But if you want to take your Minecraft knowledge one step further, we must take a look at other blocks that are also relevant, such as pistons.

Pistons are one of the most important blocks in the Minecraft game, so it’s our duty to learn how to make them.

In today’s blog post on our website, we’ll be talking about:

  • How to make a piston in Minecraft;
  • Best ways to use pistons in Minecraft;
  • Everything you need to know about the piston block in the Minecraft world.

What Are Minecraft Pistons?

A piston in Minecraft is a useful block used to push any block in a certain direction.

The piston moves forward when Redstone power interacts with it, meaning that it can be used for multiple purposes by getting connected through a signal.

The piston block is available in Minecraft Bedrock Edition, Java Edition, Education Edition, and Pocket Edition. Learn more about Minecraft Pistons here.

What is a Sticky Piston in Minecraft?

A sticky piston is the cousin of the piston block. It also pushes forward, but instead of letting the block go, it sticks to it and pulls it backwards.

Sticky pistons are a great block if you want to pull something in your structures.

What Can You Use Pistons in Minecraft For?

Pistons are rather complicated blocks that have a unique ability. You can create them indeed, but mastering them is an entirely different thing. So, what can you use pistons for?

1. Pistons Are Triggered By Redstone Pulses

Redstone is what triggers pistons. Either a Redstone Torch or Redstone Lamp will send the required Redstone signal for the piston to work.

When combined with pressure plates, pistons can create hidden doors, an automatic farm that provides perfect crops, and more.

For example, imagine placing a Redstone Torch behind a piston on the ground.

If the crop grows, the Redstone signal triggers the piston, which pushes a block in order to continue the growth cycle and farming process. It’s complicated, we know, but it works!

2. Pistons Push Blocks, Mobs and Players

Now only blocks can be pushed by pistons, but mobs and players also can. Villagers can’t open gates in Minecraft, but regular pistons can, so beware!

Note: Among the mongs that can’t be moved by pistons, we have Ender Chests, Enchantment Tables, End Portals, other pistons, and more. So, you better leave your Ender Chest quiet and safe!

3. Sticky Pistons Stick to Blocks

A sticky piston will push, but it will pull after the pushing. When the sticky piston loses power, the first block next to it will be attracted by the piston.

This creates a whole new set of possibilities in the game, meaning that you can change the outcome of other blocks depending on your needs.

How to Find Pistons in Minecraft

If you don’t want to create pistons and prefer to find them in the game, then this is what you should know:

  1. Normal pistons do not naturally generate in Minecraft - you need to make them on the crafting table;
  2. Sticky pistons do generate in any jungle temple. You need to break it and pick it from the ground if you want to use it.

How to Make a Piston in Minecraft

Now that you know how important and useful these blocks are, it’s time to make a piston! Pay attention because this recipe is a little more complicated than others, so let’s get to it.

Step 1: Gather the Required Materials

You are going to need to put the following materials in the crafting menu:

  1. Four cobblestone blocks;
  2. One iron ingot;
  3. One redstone dust;
  4. Three wood planks of any kind.

Find Cobblestone and Redstone Dust

Cobblestone is basically a stone block that can be mined with a pickaxe. Find a mine deep underground, and mine the required cobblestone.

On the other hand, Redstone Dust can be made by smelting Redstone Ore in a furnace or Blast Furnace in Minecraft.

Craft Iron Ingot and Wooden Planks

In order to make a wood plank, simply chop off a tree log and put it on the crafting table. This will create four wood planks - you will need three.

On the other hand, iron ingots are created by smelting an iron ore block in a furnace.

Since you only need one ingot, mine iron ore and finish crafting it.

Step 2: Go to the Crafting Table

Once you have found the required ingredients, you need to go to the Crafting Table. Then, follow these steps:

  • On the Crafting Menu, put the iron ingot in the very middle box;
  • Then, complete the first row of the menu with the wood planks - they can be made out of any kind of wood;
  • Right below the iron ingot, put the Redstone Dust;
  • The remaining blocks need to be filled with the four blocks of cobblestone.

Step 3: Create the Piston and Move it to Your Inventory

After completing the aforementioned steps, the piston will generate. Take the piston, and move it directly into your inventory.

That’s how you craft a piston in Minecraft! You are ready to push things at your will.
