There’s a block observing everything that is happening in the Minecraft world: the Observer.

If you are an avid Minecraft player, then you know that Redstone circuits are a very important part of your adventure.

Well, these circuits won’t be as useful as they are without Observer blocks, which is why it is so important to get to know them.

In today’s blog post, we will be giving you full insights into the following matters:

  • How to make an Observer in Minecraft;
  • What can you use an Observer in Minecraft for?;
  • Everything you need to know about the Observer in the Minecraft game.

What is an Observer Block in Minecraft?

Observers are gray blocks that detect changes and emit enough Redstone signals around them.

They have a little face that points in the same direction as the player’s FOV, and unlike other blocks, the Observer can “watch” the state of the item’s changes.

Observers can be found in Minecraft Java Edition, Education Edition, Pocket Edition, and Bedrock Edition (Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and more).

They are so important that Mojang dedicated a “block of the week” section to Observers.

Undertasting Observers in Minecraft

Observers might as well be considered as “advanced” blocks in Minecraft.

They work like this: you place an Observer somewhere, and the block will “observe” what happens in front of it.

Based on this information, the Observer will emit a signal that can be used to create multiple automatic farms and even an automatic lava pool.

1. Observers Emit a Redstone Signal

Whenever something changes in front of it, an Observer emits a Redstone signal that comes out of its back, hence, the output.

If the Observer detects a significant change in front of it, Redstone Repeaters, Redstone Comparators and other Redstone-based components will be affected.

This is how people build sugarcane farms and other cool Minecraft Build Ideas that can only be made using Redstone power.

2. Observers Are Sensitive to Redstone Components, Lamps, and Circuits

If you have a Redstone Lamp, for instance, and the lamp gets turned on, the Observer will detect it. They are also sensitive to multiple block types.

Water changing in front of them, blocks moving, pistons getting activated and other items also trigger Observer’s abilities.

Observers can also detect other Observers as well.

3. Observers Do Not Detect Villagers, Mobs, and Players

So, do Observers detect villagers? The answer is no, they don’t.

One more question - can an Observer detect a player? The answer is still no!

Nevertheless, unlike Villagers, who cannot open gates in Minecraft, Observers can indeed open gates and doors at their will.

How to Make an Observer in Minecraft

You can make an Observer on the crafting table by gathering the required materials, which we are about to show you.

Follow these quick three steps and you will be ready to make an Observer in the crafting menu in no time!

1. Gather the Required Materials

In order to craft an Observer, you will need two Redstone Dust, one Nether Quartz, and six Cobblestone blocks.

Find Cobblestone, Redstone Dust, and Nether Quartz

To find the materials that you require, you must do the following:

  • Cobblestone blocks: you can find Cobblestone in caves by mining them with an iron pickaxe. Remember that you will need six blocks of Cobblestone;
  • In order to craft Redstone Dust, you need to find Redstone Ore. Make a Nether Portal, go to the Nether, and mine Redstone Ore. Then, smelt it on a furnace;
  • Finally, and taking into advantage that you need to go to the Nether either way, find Nether Quartz Ore, and smelt on a furnace - this will generate Nether Quartz.

2. Go to the Crafting Table

After you have gathered all the ingredients for the recipe, you need to go to a Crafting Table.

3. Craft the Observer and Move it to Your Inventory

Finally, complete these steps, and you will have your Observer right away:

  1. In the Crafting Table, put three Cobblestone blocks in the first row, and three Cobblestone blocks in the third row;
  2. Now, in the second row, you will put the Nether Quartz in the third box. Likewise, the Redstone Dust should go in the second and first box of the Crafting Table;
  3. The Observer will generate, and you just need to move it to your inventory.

That’s how you do it! You are now ready to use your Observer whenever you want.

FAQ

Can I Pick an Observer from the Ground in Minecraft?

Only if you break it with a pickaxe. If you use a wooden pickaxe or a diamond pickaxe to break the Observer, then you will be able to pick it off the ground.

If you don’t use one diamond pickaxe, wooden pickaxe, iron pickaxe, or a stone pickaxe, then the block will break and you won’t be able to pick it up.
