Minecraft Fox: How to Tame & Where To Find it
Last updated: Mar 31, 2025 • 6 min readWith Minecraft, Mojang managed to create a survival world where the players can feel and breathe the environment.
This game represents a chance for players all over the world to let their imagination expand by exploring new lands, creating new items in the crafting menu, and, of course, finding new species.
One of the cutest and more interesting animals that a player can find is the Minecraft Fox, a noble, loyal, and valuable companion for your journey.
Today, we’ll talk about Foxes in Minecraft, so if you are looking to have this mob as your friend, then you have arrived at the right place. After reading this Fox guide, you will now comprehend:
- What’s the Fox in Minecraft, and where do you find one;
- Everything you need to know about adult foxes and baby foxes;
- How to tame a Fox without failing in the attempt.
What is a Fox in Minecraft?
The fox in Minecraft is a passive mob that can be found in specific parts of this games’ world, which we will mention later.
These mobs are nocturnal, meaning that they are more likely (but not exclusively) to spawn at night. There are other similar mobs in Minecraft, such as the dogs and the wolves, but foxes are special for a number of reasons.
Did you know?
Foxes were first announced by Mojang back in MINECON Earth 2018, but in order for them to appear in the game, the Taiga Biomes should win the biome vote. Luckily, they did, so now we can enjoy foxes in Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
Finding Foxes in Minecraft
Now, as you might guess, there isn’t an option to “craft a Fox” in survival mode as if they were common items. Similar to the Minecraft bee, the only way to find this type of animal is by looking for it or breeding it.
Luckily, it shouldn’t be challenging to find Minecraft foxes if you head to the right place. There’s a chance for a player to find this type of mob by going to the following biomes.
Taiga Biomes
Minecraft foxes spawn in the taiga, so this is the first location you need to visit if you want to find them.
Of course, this also includes Giant Tree taiga, which is a variation of the commonly known taiga biome.
It’s important to mention that in these biomes, the player only has a chance to find red foxes. Also, you should know that the red fox is the most common type of Fox in Minecraft, but it’s not the only one.
Snowy Taiga Biome
Baby and adult foxes spawn in Snowy Taiga Forests too! The only difference between these Minecraft foxes and the ones that spawn in standard taigas is that these are white foxes.
A white fox is not very different from a red Minecraft fox; they just look aesthetically different from each other.
3 Things You Must Know about Foxes’ Behaviour
If you want to have foxes by your side to serve you as your loyal partners, then you must at least know all about them!
We’ll not only teach you how to tame a fox, but we’ll also give you more information about them so you can create a deeper connection with your future companion.
Foxes Are Never Alone
Usually, foxes appear in groups of 2 to 4. Sometimes, an adult spawns alongside a baby fox, but this doesn’t always happen.
The groups are exactly the same in Snowy and Common Taiga biomes.
Pro tip
Foxes in this game are not affected by berry bushes: they can move freely in them with no consequences whatsoever!
Foxes Love Eating Fish and Chicken!
If a chicken is near a fox, it better pray for its life! Foxes in Minecraft also love to eat sweet berries, but they’ll jump in the air if they spot a defenseless chicken around.
Also, a fox can usually carry an item in its mouth. You can “trade” the item with the animal just by giving it some fish, sweet berry, or any other type of food.
Don’t Let Your Foxes Become the Prey!
Foxes are not the apex predator in the Minecraft world - in fact, you’ll probably need to protect them from time to time.
Polar bears and wild wolves will hunt them to death, so try not to take it close to these violent mobs.
How to Tame a Minecraft Fox
Now that you are practically a Fox Expert, it’s time to learn how to tame one!
It is safe to mention that you can’t tame a fox that has been naturally spawned in the world. It doesn’t matter if you give them a lot of sweet berries - they just won’t trust you.
The best way to tame a fox in Minecraft is by finding two parents and breeding them. Don’t worry - we’ll guide you through all the steps to find them.
Find Two Foxes
As we mentioned before, you can’t tame a fox that already exists. Therefore, what you need to do is to find two foxes and put them in the same place.
You can capture the foxes by creating blocks around them, as shown in the following image:
Breed Them to Get a Baby Fox
Once you have the two adult foxes in your power, give both of them a sweet berry. This is a crucial step to tame a Minecraft fox since giving them a sweet berry will cause them to procreate a baby fox.
Adopt Your New Fox cub!
The resulting baby fox will always trust you no matter what. Nonetheless, baby foxes are always following their parents around.
Hence, you can just leave the baby since that fox is actually your tamed animal. It won’t be scared of you at all, but it won’t follow you while it’s still a little cub.
Thus, if you don’t want your recently-tamed fox to leave, attach a lead to it so you can take it anywhere.
You can also feed to accelerate its growing process, but you’ll still need to put your newly tamed fox somewhere, so we highly recommend using a lead.

Minecraft Fox FAQ
Do Tamed Foxes Follow You?
Sadly, they won’t follow you around. They’ll fully trust you and won’t be scared of you, but since we are talking about passive animals, it is safe to say that they just won’t go on adventures with you.
Will my Tamed Fox in Minecraft Run Away?
No, tamed fox won’t run away from you. Nevertheless, if you want to keep your foxy pet in just one place, we recommend you put it inside a boat or create a lovely little house for it. Don’t forget to feed it constantly!
