If you have played Minecraft long enough, then you know that there’s a valuable item that you should learn how to make: the clock.

Clearly, a clock shows time, but it does so differently than you might expect.

So, if you want to learn more about clocks, then this Minecraft tutorial is for you.

Keep reading today’s article to get precise insights into these matters:

  • How to make a clock in Minecraft;
  • What can you use Minecraft clocks for?;
  • Everything you should know about clocks in the Minecraft game.

What is a Clock in Minecraft?

Clocks in Minecraft are simple items that can be used to tell time in the Overworld.

Nonetheless, instead of showing you numbers, they show the position of the moon and the sun.

That way, players can know the sun and the moon’s position relative to the horizon, which can help them to harvest resources more efficiently. You can either craft a clock or find it around.

Clocks appear in all Minecraft versions, such as Education Edition, Java Edition, Pocket Edition, and Bedrock Edition (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, etc.)

Understanding Minecraft Clocks

It is not a secret to anyone that clocks look amazing in your Minecraft House or Minecraft Library Designs with item frames.

Nevertheless, there are reasons to craft a clock in the crafting menu that go way beyond aesthetic purposes.

So, such as any other tool in this game, understanding clocks is fairly simple and it will help you to better appreciate their importance.

1. Clocks Tell You the Day/Night Cycle with Precision

Clocks can help your character determine the position of the moon and the sun in the sky.

Although you can simply take a look at the sky, the truth is that the Overworld heavily changes within Day/Night Cycles.

Picture this: you are using your iron pickaxe inside a cave in Survival Mode, mining the materials required to survive.

But you don’t want to go outside until you finish, and you don’t want to finish too late because creepers wander around in the night.

In this case, use a clock, check its exact pattern of the day and night side row, and you will see whether you should go out of the cave or not.

2. Clock Only Properly Work in the Overworld

Clocks do not work in the Nether nor The End. That being said, clocks will only work without problems in the Overworld.

You can still use an item frame or an invisible item frame in Minecraft to hang clocks in your Nether house, but they won’t tell time.

3. Pigglings Are Attracted to Clocks

Pigglins are not a Minecrafter’s best friend - in fact, they can be pretty dangerous. Well, whenever pigglings sense clocks around, they will run towards them.

Hide your clock and hide yourself!

How to Find Clocks in Minecraft

Before we proceed to make clocks in the Crafting Grid, it is worth noting that you can also find clocks in the following locations:

  • It is possible to find a clock in a chest loot box, mostly if they are located near shipwrecks;
  • You can also find clocks near a ruined Nether Portal;
  • Last but not least, some wandering traders or librarian villagers can trade you a clock in exchange for 4 emeralds.

How to Make a Clock in Minecraft

Now that you know what a clock in Minecraft is about, it is time to make a clock! In order to have a clock in your inventory, you will need to find some materials first.

Without further ado, let’s learn where the moon and the sun are with exact precision by making a clock in Minecraft!

Step 1: Gather the Required Materials

In order to make a clock in the crafting table, you will need four gold ingots and one Redstone dust, the same type of dust you use to make a Redstone Lamp in Minecraft using the crafting area.

Mine Gold Ore to Make Gold Ingots

A gold ingot can be made by smelting gold ore in a furnace. You can find gold ore or raw gold by going deep into the ground.

After you obtain underground gold ore, go to a furnace, and smelt the gold by putting it in the first box.

Then, a gold ingot will appear. Move it to your inventory, but keep in mind that you will need four of them.

Smelt Redstone Ore to Make Redstone Dust

In order to make Redstone dust, you need to smelt Redstone Ore in a furnace.

Redstone Ore can be found deep underground in the Overworld, where there are large veins of Redstone Ore.

Mine it, smelt the ore in a furnace, and it will drop Redstone dust. You only need one piece of this material.

Step 2: Go to the Crafting Table

After you have all the materials required to proceed, follow these step-by-step instructions on the crafting table:

  1. To make a clock, put the Redstone Dust in the middle box of the crafting menu. The Redstone Dust always goes on this middle box, regarding the version of the game you play;
  2. Now, put one Gold Ingot in the second box of the third row, and put another Gold Ingot just above the Redstone Dust, in the first row, to be precise;
  3. Finally, put the remaining Gold Ingots in the first and third box of the second row, surrounding the Redstone Dust.

Step 3: Move the Clock to Your Inventory

Following the previously mentioned instructions will generate the clock in the crafting menu.

Move the clock out of the Crafting Grid directly into your inventory, and you will be good to go.

That’s how you make a clock in Minecraft using the Crafting Menu! It is not an easy-to-craft item, but it’s indeed worth the trouble. Need more Minecraft tips?
