What’s the Beacon Block in Minecraft?
The Minecraft Beacon is a block that spawns a marvelous light into the sky.
Nevertheless, the importance of the Beacon doesn’t lie on its looks, but on its function. The powers this magnificent item provides to players are among the best in the whole world of Minecraft.
Did you know?
Mojang introduced the Beacon almost 10 years ago! (2012). Players first experienced this solid block in the Pretty Scary Update for Minecraft Java Edition and other versions of the game.
How to Make a Beacon in Minecraft
Now, let’s get straight to the main point of this Minecraft Guide.
As usual, the first step to craft a Beacon is finding the right materials to do this. Therefore, it’s essential to know how to create or find the required items for this task.
Crafting Recipe For the Minecraft Beacon
There are three main ingredients to craft the Minecraft Beacon, which are the following:
Finding the Nether Star Requires A Lot of Courage
It’s impossible to avoid going to certain dangerous dimensions, such as The End to craft a Shulker Box in Minecraft, or The Nether to find some important ingredients.
Consequently, if you think defeating the Ender Dragon is a challenging task, then you haven’t faced the most difficult boss in the game: The Wither.
Nevertheless, if you really want to create a Beacon, the only way to do this is by collecting three Wither Skeleton Skulls. Go to a Nether Fortress, fight Wither Skeletons, and then gather 4 pieces of Soul Sand.
Put the Soul Sand blocks in a T-shape and place the three Skulls above them, as shown in the following video. Beware - the powers of this mob are out of this world. Prepare yourself for really intense combat!
After defeating the Wither, it’ll drop a Nether Star. Finally, lead to the Crafting Table and arrange the items as shown below:
Remember that the Nether Star must always be placed in the middle row. The glass must fill the top row and the Obsidian the bottom row - else, it won’t work.
How to Activate a Beacon in Minecraft
Now that you have a recently crafted Beacon, it’s time to activate it. In order to do this, you will need to build a Beacon Pyramid.
Still, this can only be done with the following solid blocks (you can’t use transparent blocks, such as glass):
- Iron Blocks;
- Gold Blocks;
- Emerald Blocks;
- Diamond Blocks.
You can make an entire pyramid by mixing these materials, so it is possible to combine a layer of gold, emerald, diamond and iron blocks to have a fully activated Beacon Pyramid.
Level 1
This is the most basic way to power up Beacons. It isn’t even a pyramid: just create a 3x3 base of 9 blocks and that’s it.
Level 2
In this case, you will need a total of 34 blocks, creating a 5x5 base and a 3x3 top as shown in the following image:
Just don’t forget to always place the Beacon in the center block. Else, the beacon’s light won’t turn on.
Level 3
Now we are getting serious over here. Build a 7x7 base, a following layer of 5x5, and then a final 3x3 top. The powers of this pyramid are just out of this world!
How Many Blocks Do You Need for a Full Beacon? (Level 4)
So, are you tired of building already!? We need more blocks over here!
It’s time to build a full pyramid. No more excuses: build a 9x9 base, a layer of 7x7, then another layer of 5x5 and finally a 3x3 top.
The result will be a fully powered Beacon of four levels. It just looks sensational:
Status Effect of the Beacon
Why is it important to have a fully activated Beacon? Because of the primary and secondary Status Effect that it grants to the players.
Minecraft Beacon Range
Depending on the level of the pyramid, the Beacon will be able to boost nearby players with status effects. They have a maximum range of 50 blocks as shown in the following table:
/ table /
On the other hand, the vertical range of Beacons is infinite.
Haste, Speed, Jump Boost and Regeneration
Once the Beacon is ready, the Beacon’s menu will open by interacting with it.
As you can see, it has secondary and primary powers, such as jump boost, speed, and more.
In order to use these powers, you need to sacrifice one gold ingot, iron ingot, diamond or emerald to the Beacon.
The primary powers depend on the level of the pyramid, while the secondary status effects can only be activated by having a full-sized pyramid.
How to Change the Color of the Beacon in Minecraft
You can change the light color of the Beacon! All you need to do is get some Stained Glass and put it right where the beam begins.
Luckily, you can dye Stained Glass with any color you want, so changing the light of the Beacon to the color of your preference it’s a walk in the park. If you need more details to speed up the process, watch the following video:

FAQ
Can You Have Multiple Beacons in Minecraft?
Yes, you can! The effects of the Beacons will combine if the player is within the recommended range. Still, this will take you a lot of effort since you will need to build giant pyramid structures all over the place.
Do Beacons Only Affect Players?
Yes. Beacons do not affect nor attack nearby mobs. Nevertheless, since Beacons emit a light level of 15, they can prevent mobs from spawning near them.
