What Is an Axolotl in Minecraft?
Axolotls in Minecraft are the little water creatures - a representation of real-life amphibians. So, if you ever wondered if Minecraft axolotls are real creatures, the answer is YES.
Real-life axolotls are dramatically endangered species and the addition of axolotls to Minecraft’s world is partially an emotional appeal to raise society’s awareness of the fact. They used to live in two lakes in Mexico - Xochimilco, and Chalco. The latter no longer exists.
In Minecraft, axolotls are a bit more square and angular, but no less adorable. They’re so cute, they’ve been mentioned by huge YouTube names like PewDiePie or GeorgeNotFound. People are making fanarts, sculptures, and even crochet axolotl puppets!
In the game, axolotls eat tropical fish. It will be the key to catching this little creature, so keep it in mind.
Axolotls are amphibians, which means that they live both on the land and in the water. However, water is their main habitat.

Once on the land, this cute animal will seek the nearest water block, as it will die after 5 minutes outside of it. It is why once caught it has to be carried around in a Bucket of the aquatic mob.
An axolotl army can help you greatly in your quest to conquer the ocean. You can release multiple axolotls that will follow you as long as you wield a Bucket of tropical fish, obliterating all enemies in sight.
It will play dead when sustaining damage underwater. This mechanic gives axolotl a chance to recover and reenter the combat.
Heads up!
Playing dead does not make axolotl invulnerable. It will die from taking damage.
Minecraft Axolotl Spawn Location
Axolotls are aquatic mobs, so you should look for them near water. You can find axolotls in underwater caves on a stone type block with base_stone_overworld tag, which can be:
- Tuff,
- Deepslate,
- Stone,
- Granite,
- Diorite,
- Andesite.
You can also try to spawn them in creative mode using Spawn Egg and Axolotl Bucket.
Finally, a command /summon works too, however, it doesn’t provide as much satisfaction.
Since they live in caves, they spawn in light level 0, which is total darkness. Moreover, you need to go below y:63, which is the sea level or lower.
How To Tame Axolotls In Minecraft?
Unlike other tameable animals in Minecraft, axolotls cannot be tamed. At least, you can’t catch them by holding their favorite food in hand.
It’s true that if you hold a Bucket of tropical fish, nearby axolotls will follow you. However, they can’t end up tamed.
As we said before, the key to axolotls in Minecraft is tropical fish. Just like in real life, Minecraft axolotls love eating live fish.
There is also a possibility to attach a lead and thus “catch” an axolotl. The main difference is that the axolotl will die if outside of the water for more than five minutes.
How To Breed Axolotls In Minecraft?
Taming animals is just the beginning of the fun in Minecraft. Once you tame animals, you can encourage them to breed.
When given a correct food item, animals can enter “love mode,” which is how you can create your own, private zoo (or an army).
But, as we said earlier, you can’t tame axolotls. It doesn’t mean that you can’t breed them, though.
When it comes to the correct food choice to breed axolotl, you will need Buckets of tropical fish and two axolotls. Feeding fully grown axolotls with a Bucket of fish will make them enter the love mode.
Once successful, a baby axolotl will appear.
Heads up!
Breeding axolotls gives you a slight chance of spawning a baby blue axolotl. In other cases, the offspring will match the color of one of the adult axolotls.
Minecraft Axolotl Colours
Axolotls appear in five different colors.
Cyan Axolotl
Gold (yellow)
Leucistic (Pink)
Wild (Brown)
Blue Axolotl
And finally - the rarest among all in Minecraft - blue axolotl.
