What is a Trapdoor in Minecraft?

A Minecraft trapdoor is a transparent solid block that can be opened and closed at your will.

There are different kinds of trapdoors, from oak trapdoor to dark oak trapdoor likewise.

It is possible to find trapdoors in all versions of the game, meaning that you can use them in Minecraft Java Edition, Pocket Edition, Education Edition, and Bedrock Edition (Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation, and more).

It has been established: villagers can’t open gates in Minecraft. But can they open trapdoors? We have also answered this question in our related blog post, so go and check it out!

What Can You Use a Minecraft Trapdoor For?

Trapdoors are simply: you right-click on them, and they will open and close at your will.

It works exactly as a door would, so there isn’t any secret behind them.

Nonetheless, there are five fundamental things you need to know about trapdoors before crafting one:

  • Trapdoors are sensitive to Redstone power. Therefore, if you have a Redstone Repeater or Comparator sending a Redstone pulse, the trapdoor will either open or close;
  • Mobs can’t open a closed trapdoor. If, for instance, you have a tamed Minecraft fox or a cat around, they won’t be able to go through trapdoors, regardless of the type of trapdoor we are talking about;
  • Trapdoors are pretty handy when it comes to breeding mobs. For instance, since villagers cannot open trapdoors, you can breed villagers in Minecraft by putting trapdoors as the only way to go out and in one certain place;
  • Trapdoors occupy a single block space, and they can also be moved by pistons;
  • Regardless of the edition you play (Java Edition, Education Edition, Nintendo Switch edition, and more) trapdoors will behave similarly.

Pro Tip

Trapdoors also naturally generate in the Overworld. For instance, Spruce Trapdoors can be found in shipwrecks, whereas Jungle Trapdoors can be found in villages. This applies to Minecraft Java Edition, Education Edition, and more.

How to Make a Trapdoor in Minecraft

There are two types of trapdoors in Minecraft: wooden trapdoors and iron trapdoors.

The only thing that changes between both trapdoors is the recipe and the visual component - otherwise, they work similarly.

So, depending on the type of trapdoor you want to make, the recipe will change.

Worry not - continue reading this tutorial and you will quickly learn how to make both!

1. How to Craft Wooden Trapdoors

In order to make a wooden trapdoor you will need wooden planks. Nonetheless, there’s a catch: you can only use matching planks.

For instance, if you use warped planks, you will craft a warped trapdoor.

If you use oak planks, you will make oak trapdoors - as simple as that!

Step 1: Gather Six Matching Wood Planks

Firstly, you need six planks of the same type. These wood planks can be of any material, but they need to be similar.

Using five oak planks and a single warped planks won’t do the trick - they must all be the same.

Step 2: Go to the Crafting Menu and Make the Wooden Trapdoor

Go to the crafting table, and simply place the six planks in the two bottom rows of the menu. If you have oak planks, an oak trapdoor will generate.

Simply take the trapdoor and move it to your inventory - that’s how you make a wooden trapdoor!

2. How to Craft Iron Trapdoor

On the other hand, if you want to make an iron trapdoor, then you will require iron ingots. Follow this recipe and you will be good to go in no time.

Step 1: Gather Four Iron Ingots

You need four ingots. You can either use nine iron nuggets to make an ingot, or make several ingots using a single block of iron in the crafting grid - it is up to you!

Iron is a little harder to make and find than wood planks, but as soon as you have the four ingots, head to the crafting menu.

Step 2: Go to the Crafting Table and Make Iron Trapdoors

Finally, go to the crafting table with your four iron ingots, and place them at the top left corner of the table - each one in a single block.

The iron trapdoor will generate, and you just need to move it to your inventory. That’s how you make trapdoors!
