How to Make a Lever in Minecraft
Last updated: Mar 31, 2025 • 5 min readIn Minecraft, you need all the help you can get from specific blocks that are meant to create more complex structures.
Although you might just settle with crafting a simple house, at some point in your adventure, you will need to go one step further.
Therefore, all Minecraft must know what levers are, and how they can use them.
It doesn’t matter if you prefer Minecraft Education Edition, Java Edition, or Bedrock Edition - you will need levers either way.
That’s why in today’s article on Hypenoon, we will be talking about:
- How to make a lever in Minecraft;
- Step-by-step instructions so you can craft a lever in no time;
- Understanding levels and their uses.
What is a Minecraft Lever?
A Minecraft level is a non-solid block that can be used for multiple purposes in the game.
It works similarly to levers in real life: you use the lever, and while you have lever open, an action gets triggered.
Levers can be found in the following versions: Minecraft Java Edition (Windows, Mac), Bedrock Edition (Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation), Pocket, and Education Edition (Mac and Windows).
Nevertheless, as we will show you in this Minecraft tutorial, levers work slightly differently from Bedrock to Java Edition of the game.
They are similar to Buttons in Minecraft, which you can also make to activate as many mechanisms as you want.
What Can You Use Minecraft Levers For?
Levers work through Redstone pulse. This allows players to use one or two levers for different purposes.
Unlike buttons, levers do not need to be constantly pressed in order to be activated.
This creates a new universe of possibilities for this block, and you can use it for the following purposes.
1. Activate Doors, Fences, and Mechanisms
If you need to trigger pistons, an individual door independently, and even a logic gate, you can use a lever for this purpose.
You can place either a left lever or a right lever depending on your needs.
Levers can be placed on solid blocks, not on non-solid blocks.
Their emission travels equal distances as the one determined by Redstone mechanisms.
Consequently, it can literally open as many doors as you want, depending on the exact pattern and distance to the item.
This comes especially handy when Building in Minecraft Survival mode.
2. Minecraft Lever Placement
You can place a top, down, right, or left lever on a block.
Nevertheless, there’s a crucial difference between Bedrock and Java Edition.
You can place a lever underwater in Bedrock Edition (Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, etc.), but you cannot place a lever in Minecraft Java Edition under the sea.
Consequently, Minecraft levers might work differently depending on the structure you want to make (and the version, of course).
3. Power a Redstone Circuit
We know that Redstone circuits are rather complicated for beginners (what is Redstone Comparator either way?!) but once you get the hang of them, you’ll become a master.
A lever in Minecraft emits a Redstone pulse.
Consequently, you can manage a Redstone circuit due to Redstone emission.
Since it is common knowledge that a pulse of Redstone can travel up to fifteen blocks, you can, for instance, put two Redstone Comparators alongside a lever so you can decide the course of action of a mechanism.
This can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be.
How to Make a Lever in Minecraft
In order to make a lever, simply gather the materials needed for it: stick, cobblestone.
It is quite easy to get these materials and use them on the crafting grid.
Without further ado, follow these quick four steps and you will know how to make a lever in Minecraft in no time!
Step 1: Gather the Required Materials
Firstly, you need to find one Cobblestone, one Stick - nothing more, nothing less.
You can make a stick on the crafting menu by simply merging two planks of any kind - one on the middle box of the second row, and one below it.
On the other hand, Cobblestone appears in caves and can be mined using a simple pickaxe.
Step 2: Go to the Crafting Menu
Go to a crafting table with one stick and one Cobblestone block.
These are the only two materials you need to make a lever in Minecraft, regardless of the version you choose to use.
Step 3: Put the Materials on the Crafting Table
Put the stick on the center square. Right below that middle box, you will put the Cobblestone block.
It is a common mistake for some players to put the stick on the first row - it needs to be on the same grid as stated previously on the crafting grid.
Step 4: Move the Minecraft Lever to the Inventory
After putting the materials where they belong, the lever will be created.
Then, simply drag the lever from the crafting menu, and place it on your inventory.
That’s how you make a lever in Minecraft! Elementary, isn’t it?
Minecraft Lever Command
In case you don’t want to make a lever by yourself, you can always use a lower or higher lever command in order to be obtained.
There are commands for everything, such as Changing Tick Speed, and spawning any kind of weapon.
According to the Minecraft wiki, you can make a lever by putting the following command in the chat window:
/give @p lever 1
Use it, and you will obtain your Minecraft level in no time! For more Minecraft insights, check out everything we have for you here, at Hypenoon.
FAQ
Can Mobs Activate Levers?
In general, they can’t. Nevertheless, creepers exploding might as well trigger levers as a direct result of the explosion.
