How to Make an Infinite Lava Source in Minecraft
Last updated: Mar 31, 2025 • 5 min readIf you have played Minecraft Survival Mode before, then you know how important it is to optimize resources.
Although lava isn’t the most useful resource around, it can indeed be used for many purposes.
As a consequence, you perhaps want to make an infinite lava source to comply with your needs.
Having an infinite amount of lava at your disposal is really good, and since this isn’t a renewable resource anymore in the Minecraft world, it is not quite easy to do so.
In today’s article, we will be covering everything you need to know about the following matters:
- How to make infinite lava in Minecraft;
- Best ways of having an infinite lava source in Minecraft;
- What to know about lava blocks and usages.
Making an Infinite Source of Lava in Minecraft
Lava allows you to create very different source blocks, such as cobblestone.
Cobblestone is widely used in the Minecraft world, and it can only be created with lava and water.
Besides, lava fuels furnaces, which you need in order to produce different items during your journey.
Lava sources are primarily the depths of the Overworld, and the Nether Builds.
Nonetheless, the Nether isn’t a safe location, and using your iron pickaxe or diamond pickaxe to go to the center of the Overworld might be tiresome.
That’s why it’s imperative for some users to enter into peaceful mode in this game and find a secure way to create infinite lava.
Pro Tip
Do you like using Cobblestone in your buildings? Make a Cobblestone generator! You will need a large amount of (if not infinite) water. Learn more about this matter here: Cobblestone Generator in Minecraft.
What is the Infinite Lava Source Block?
The infinite lava source block was a block that allowed you to have infinite fuel of lava in a small cross shape lava pool.
Nonetheless, this feature was removed a while ago because the developers considered that it was really easy to get a continuous flow of lava.
In later versions, players don’t have the ability to make a lava farm with this block.
As a consequence, if you play the current version of Minecraft, you will see that this block isn’t available anymore.

How to Make Infinite Lava in Minecraft
There are two proven ways to make an infinite lava source in Minecraft as of 2022.
You can no longer make the cross shape pool used a while ago, so we need to look for alternatives.

Method 1: Go to a Lava Lake in the Nether
The first method isn’t an infinite source of lava as of it, but it works nevertheless.
It’s a little tiring, but it brings results.
It consists of going to the Nether by making a portal.
There, you will have plenty of lava lakes to choose from, since they cover large areas of the Nether dimension.
Pro Tip
You have complete freedom while making your Nether Portal, but the whole point of Minecraft is customizing and creating!

Step 1: Make 36 Buckets in the Crafting Table
Firstly, create 36 buckets. You will need three iron ingots for each bucket you make. You can’t take more than 36 buckets to the Nether, though.
Step 2: Build a Nether Portal Near a Lava Source
Then, go to the Nether using a portal. Make sure that each bucket is on your inventory. Then, locate a lava lake.
Step 3: Fill Up Lava Buckets and Go Back to the Overworld
Now, you need to fill all buckets with lava. You will take each bucket back to the Overworld, and repeat the process until you have enough lava to cover your needs.
As we mentioned before, this might be tiresome, but it is indeed an infinite lava source since the lava flows will never end!
Method 2: Use Pointed Dripstone and a Cauldron
The other method can be done in the Overworld, meaning that you don’t have to travel to the Nether. It consists of using a Cauldron in Minecraft and dripstone.
Step 1: Make a Cauldron and Get Pointed Dripstone
You can learn how to make a Minecraft cauldron in the previously mentioned blog post - it’s pretty easy!
Likewise, Pointed Dripstones can’t be made, but they can be found in caves. Learn how to find Pointed Dripstone here.
Step 2: Put a Lava Bucket Above a Solid Block
Now, the “complicated” part:
- You need to use any solid block. For practical purses, we recommend using glass because it looks nicer and clearer. You need to put the blocks in a square shape, leaving a hole in the center block for the lava to fill it;
- Then, put a bucket of lava in the center block. Right behind this block, you will place the dripstone;
- The lava should slowly flow below the dripstone. There, you need to have a cauldron receiving these lava drops.
Step 3: Wait for Dripping Lava to Fill the Cauldrons
The lava will slowly drip from the dripstone filling the cauldron. Then, you can pick up this lava with a bucket, and use it for whatever you want.
If you want more lava, you can place multiple cauldrons and wait for them to be filled.
That’s how you make an infinite lava source! We hope you liked this article.
