  • Uses you can give to Minecraft green dye;
  • What to know about green dye in your Minecraft version.

What is Green Dye in Minecraft?

Green dye is a primary color dye that you can find in each Minecraft version, including Minecraft Education Edition, Minecraft Java Edition, Pocket Edition, and Bedrock Edition (Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation.)

All Java, Bedrock and Education Editions have many dyes of different colors that plates can use to paint a block or an item.

The dyed item or block will not change its functionality - it will only change its color.

What Can You Use Green Dye in Minecraft For?

Although most dyes can be made (such as orange dye, white dye, lime dye, and more) on the crafting table, the green dye is a little different because it’s a primary color dye.

But before we get to create green dye, we first need to understand what you can use it for.

1. Craft Other Dyes (Cyan Dye, Lime Dye, and More)

The main purpose of green dye is to be used in a crafting recipe, such as the one for lime and cyan dye.

In the same way, green dye can be used to create glow sticks in Survival Mode and make green wood as well.

Some secondary dyes, such as Purple Dye in Minecraft, require the combination of many required materials (flowers, sand, and more) in order to be made.

In the case of green dye, it is an item that it’s used mainly as a base dye in both Survival and Creative mode.

2. Make Green Wool and Shulker Boxes

The easiest way to make green wool is by using green dye on a Sheep and then killing it for wool profit.

You can also make green collars for your tamed animals using green dye as part of the green collars recipes.

Likewise, if you have a Shulker Box, you can use green dye on your Shulker Box to make it look better. Learn more about Shulker Boxes in Minecraft here.

3. Craft Green Dye Concrete and Terracotta

There are numerous decorative blocks that can be made using green dye, including Minecraft Concrete and Terracotta.

Green dye is a vital ingredient in making green concrete powder, which can later be used in your builds.

Other dyes, such as white dye and cyan dye, can also be used to paint any block to make it look as you wish.

How to Find Green Dye in Minecraft

Although you can simply craft green dye in Minecraft, there is also the possibility to find green dye by the following means:

  • A Wandering Trader can give you a green dye in exchange for emerald. You need to find a Wandering Trader and offer him an emerald to obtain from one to two green dyes. Wandering Traders are commonly found in villages;
  • It is also possible to find green dye in desert village chests.

How to Make Green Dye in Minecraft

In order to obtain green dye, you need to smelt a cactus plant in the furnace or blast furnace.

Contrary to popular belief, you cannot make green dye on a Minecraft Crafting Table.

Thus, the required materials are quite simple:

  • One furnace or blast furnace;
  • Cactus blocks - as many as you need;
  • Fuel for the furnace.

Step 1: Find Cactus Blocks

Cactus grows in a desert biome or near a desert village. The plant spawns above a sand block, and you can find thousands of cactus lying around in desert biome and badlands biomes as well.

So, head there, and hit the cactus. The cactus will break and you will be able to pick it off the ground.

Step 2: Go to a Minecraft Furnace

Now, you need to go to a furnace or Blast Furnace in Minecraft - they both work pretty well to make green dye.

You can also make a furnace by yourself using several Cobblestone blocks in Minecraft.

Step 3: Add Fuel to Smelt Cacti

Once your furnace is crafted and ready to go, you need to open the furnace menu and start melting cactus on it.

  • Place the cactus in the top box on the furnace;
  • Then, you will need some fuel - sticks will do the job, but you can also use wood materials of any kind if you please;
  • You will see the flames cooking the cactus. Then, the green dye will form.

Finally, just take the green dye, and move it out of the furnace. The smelting cactus will turn into the green dye you need, so get it to your inventory and that will be all.

FAQ

Do I Need Blue Dye to Make Green Dye in Minecraft?

No. There’s the common misbelief that using blue dye and yellow dye will get you green dye.

This is entirely wrong. Although blue dye can indeed be crafted using lapis lazuli on a crafting menu table, you cannot combine it with yellow dye to make the green one.

Mojang was very clear about this matter on their user bug reports.
