What is Cauldron in Minecraft?

A cauldron in Minecraft is a “substance holder” with really specific uses for each version of the game (Bedrock Edition and Java Edition).

The cauldron has evolved over time: once a simple water holder, the cauldron can now store a variety of substances like water, dyed water, lava, powdered snow, dyed water, and potions. The latter two substances only work for Minecraft Bedrock Edition.

How to Make a Cauldron

Minecraft is a crafting game, and the easiest way to get a cauldron is by crafting. In order to create a cauldron, however, you’ll need seven iron ingots to craft a cauldron.

Cauldron recipe

The only ingredients you’ll need are: 7 iron ingots.

You can get an iron ingot from iron ore by placing it on your furnace and fueling it with any fuel like lava buckets.

If you don’t have any idea where to get iron ore, here are some tips: mine! Most mines will have from 4 to 10 iron blocks.

Once you have your iron ingots ready, open the crafting menu to begin the process. Use each image as a guide.

Step 1: Open your crafting table

Set up a 9x9 crafting area to make a cauldron on your crafting table.

Step 2: Add the iron ingots

From your inventory, take the iron ingots and drag them into the menu box forming a U shape. If you did it correctly, the cauldron will appear in the box to the right of your crafting table.

Step 3: Drag the cauldron from the box to your inventory

The iron ingots will be consumed but you’ll now have a crafted cauldron on your inventory ready to be filled with anything.

Where to find cauldrons in Minecraft

You can find cauldrons in Minecraft inside Swamp Hut (Witch’s Hut). If you don’t want to Swamp Hut, you can find them in an igloo basement, woodland mansions, and in plains village and desert village tannery houses in both versions of Minecraft.

In Minecraft Java Edition, there are some filled cauldrons in plains village tannery house.

Using your cauldron on Bedrock and Java Edition

A cauldron is unable to hold any sort of food even if it’s liquid, like milk but can hold a variety of liquids.

Apart from that, a cauldron is the only way to hold water in the Nether. While not as useful as arrows or a more valuable block, it is still a useful item.

These are the uses of the cauldron on every single version of Minecraft, including Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Mac, and Windows (excluding mods).

Here are the most common ways you can use Cauldron for:

Store Water

You can fill any cauldron with a water bucket. It’s one of the only ways to have water in the Nether, it can help you make a beautiful sink in your house and can even prevent burns in a pinch by dipping yourself into it.

You can fill all three levels with a single bucket of water, water bottles, or by simply leaving out in the rain. Finally, you could also fill bottles with water from your Cauldron.

Store powdered snow

You can fill up your cauldron with snow if you drop a snow-filled bucket over it.

Alternatively, you could just leave your cauldron outside while it snows and wait till it’s filled. You can use the powdered snow from your cauldron to create snow blocks.

Store Lava

Take out a lava bucket a pour it into the cauldron to fill it with lava. Nothing around the cauldron will catch on fire while it holds the lava; it’s friendly to your wood materials.

Here is a tip: a lava cauldron emits a light level of 15.

If you use it with a Redstone comparator, the same cauldron will emit a Redstone level of 3.

Dye Leather Armor & Other leather items

You can use it to dye leather like leather armor, boots, and anything leather in general. The cauldron makes it easy to dye leather armor in Minecraft and be a bit more stylish than the rest. As of today, you can only process leather and not weapons like arrows.

Hold Potions in Cauldrons

You need cauldrons to brew potions. You can hold potions on your cauldrons, those include both splash potions and lingering potions. The potion effect won’t change but it mostly increases the efficacy to use it.

Standing on said potion won’t give you the effects, but you’ll be able to tip your arrows on them. You’ll need 3 potions of any kind to fill the cauldron.

Again, cauldrons have 3 filled levels, and each one of them will let you tip your more arrows on them. You’ll get 16, 32, and 64 arrows.

It doesn’t matter if you are playing on Xbox, Nintendo Switch, MAC Java Edition, or Windows, the experience on all versions will be relatively the same.

As you’ve seen there are version differences and it mainly affects the Minecraft world in a minor way.

For starters, a cauldron can now store a potion on the Bedrock Edition, while on the Java Edition it’s slightly easier to find them.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter in which version you play, if it’s the Windows or Xbox one, what really matters in Minecraft is that you have fun breaking any block that crosses your path.
